Facts about Dog Agility

 by: Brad Carlson

Dog agility trials are becoming more and more popular the world over. They began in England, as so many good things, do, but "agility fever" quickly spread all over the globe. Now there are clubs and events everywhere that there are dogs.

Some clubs include the Kennel Club (in the U.K.), the United States Dog Agility Association (USDAA), the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the Agility Association of Canada (AAC). However, you need not be affiliated with or even live near a club or training facility to enjoy the sport of dog agility

Dogs are intelligent creatures, and they love a challenge. As the aforementioned kennel clubs are well aware, every breed has its own strengths and assets, both physically and intellectually. It's great fun to explore what your dog can do, and even train for competitions!

Even if you train your dog on your own dog agility course, and don't wish to be affiliated with any groups, it's still a good idea to stay in touch with them via phone or e-mail to stay aware of any events that may be happening in your area. Dog owners are a great group of people, and love to share advice and success stories. Dog agility events are also a great way to get outside and meet and greet other great pets.

Agility competition for dogs became popular all over the world in the 1980s, and agility enthusiasts have been looking for top-notch dog training equipment that is better looking and more durable than home-made obstacles, while still being affordable. This high-energy form of competition and fun is something that can bring people and dogs together in a spirit of excellence, and we interact with our customers accordingly.

Some of the dog training obstacles include A-frames, dogwalks, weave poles, mini contact equipment, contact trainer, jumps (single, double, and triple), chutes, barrels, and teeters. Everything you need to set up a competition course should be easily ordered and quickly assembled.

Your dog training equipment should be durable enough to withstand practice session after practice session with no risk of injury to you or your dog.
Equipment
should be made out of durable, well-sealed materials that are weatherproof and built to last. Safety and visual appeal are what matter in dog training equipment.

Crate Training Your Puppy

Crate Training Your Puppy

 by: Laura Anderson

Crate training has many huge benefits, but the biggest by far is how much easier it makes housebreaking.

Crate training works with the puppy?s natural instincts.
A dog is, by nature, a den animal.
He will feel comforted and safe in his crate, and he will not want to soil where he sleeps.
This is your golden ticket to housebreaking. Of course, you may have to convince him that this is his bed
at first.

The first few nights your puppy is home, expect he will cry and howl for you to let him out.
He wants to be with you. This is natural, as is your desire to let him out. Restrain yourself. He needs to learn from the very beginning where his place is to be.
If you allow him to run the house now, be prepared for the mess that will cover your floors by morning and for many mornings to come.

Crate training works very well...

Pilates and You

Pilates and You

 by: Harriet Spinzer

Pilates is a wonderful system of exercise and strength training developed by Joseph Pilates.
In recent years, it has become one of the most popular exercise systems in the world.
Pilates studios have opened in cities all over America and beyond.
Pilates training consists of over 500 individual exercises, all designed to help the individual develop core strength, flexibility, and balance.

There is also a system of philosophy that is integral to Pilates practice, known as mind/body fitness.
It is very similar to Yoga or Tai Chi, in that it promotes a system of overall wellness based upon developing health from the inside-out.
The purpose is to learn how to develop one?s mental ability in order to effectively control movement, and therefore achieve balance in body and mind.

The Pilates system teaches that effective exercise is based upon quality and...

Tire Jump Foundation Training for your Dog

Tire Jump Foundation Training for your Dog

 by: Brad Carlson

The Tire Jump seems like a relatively easy agility obstacle, at least from a persons perspective, but in the Novice Agility ring you see many dogs that refuse to go through it, many go under it, while others choose to go around it.
How can you prepare your beginning agility for success with the Tire Jump?

Let's go back to foundation training. When introducing any new obstacle, you want to keep the difficulty low and emphasize the fun and ease that it can be for your dog.
If your dog has a sit stay, leave him about 2 feet in front of the tire, facing it, walk to the other side and call your dog, "Come Tire".
If he won't budge, put your hand with his treat or toy through the tire to coax him to follow your hand and jump through the tire.
Practice this several times until he willing is coming to you.
Keep him about 2 feet from the tire, you...

Strength Training Develops Solid Softball Players

Strength Training Develops Solid Softball Players

 by: Lynn VanDyke

Softball is a popular sport these days.
Corporations, adult leagues and inner-city competitions are fueling the demand for skilled and competitive players.
While softball may be experiencing a surge of interest, the basic techniques to improve your game and gain a competitive edge have remained the same.

Many do not realize that basic softball movements such as batting and throwing are not a directly related to arm strength.
The movement begins in the legs.
The power is then transferred into the hips, the torso, the upper back, the chest, the shoulders and then the arms.

A proper softball strength training routine will include an exercise for each muscle group.
During the off-season, athletes will be able to strength train 2-3 times per week.
Training should be reduced to 1-2 times per week during the season.

The Best Ways to Teach your Puppy the English Language

The Best Ways to Teach your Puppy the English Language

 by: Dy Witt

Puppies are eager and willing to do the right thing.
They love your happy face and the squealy noises you make when they have done something great.
They will do ANYthing to please you because of the loving rewards they get from being a Good Dog.
They just cannot get enough of your
praises and cuddles.

Moving towards "What a good dog!" from "Bad Puppy!" is based on one thing.
Your puppy does not know the English language, and the faster he learns it, the better for all, because the minute he knows what you want he will DO it.
Make it faster and easier for him to learn by keeping these tips in mind:

1.
Be consistent in the words you choose to teach him commands.
If you say, "Wanna go potty?" in the morning, and "Have to go out?" two hours later, and "Wanna go pee?" two hours later, etc., then...

Tutoring Versus Training

Tutoring Versus Training

 by: Dr. Ken Gibson

Your child has difficulty in third grade math. You send him to a tutor. The tutor works diligently for several weeks with him on his grade-level math concepts and assignments. He goes on to pass the third grade with B's. So far so good. Summer comes and goes. His fourth grade assignments hit, and once again, basic weaknesses prevent him from learning the new concepts. The processing and visualizing skills he needs just aren't there. You could pay for another round of tutoring to help with these assignments as well, but the underlying reason he failed to understand them in the first place goes untouched. It will reemerge...

How do you "train" someone to learn?

Current learning science makes it necessary to look at learning as two distinct parts:
Specific academic study and a student's underlying ability to learn. To create the best opportunity for maximum academic progress, the underlying...
